TEACHING ASSISTANTS
In a recent survey of teaching assistants two-thirds of those who took part (66%) said they have not received enough training to deliver the curriculum.
Others said that on in-service training days (INSET days), which are meant to be used for staff development, they had been asked to clean classrooms and do photocopying.
Hundreds of teaching assistants say they don’t have adequate training to deliver the Curriculum for Wales, says their union UNISON.

PAY UP IMPORTANT UPDATE
Following our 2023 pay ballet results in the summer, UNISON’s NJC Committee made the decision not to pursue industrial action. UNISON met with the other local government unions, GMB and Unite, on Wednesday 1 November, and the joint decision is to accept the pay offer for 2023 of an increase of £1,925 on all NJC pay points (pro rata’d for part-time and term time only staff). The pay award will be backdated to 1 April 2023.
We want to thank you for your patience while we have worked to resolve this year's pay dispute. The local government employers have been informed and our immediate priority is to get the money into the pay packets of our hardworking members as soon as possible. If you have any questions, please contact your local branch.
The NJC Committee will be meeting in November, and we are starting preparations for the 2024 pay campaign as a matter of urgency, starting with consulting on and submitting a joint pay claim. The fight to restore local government pay will continue and we plan to be stronger than ever to get fair pay for councils and school workers.

DON'T CUT OUR REPS
We stand in solidarity with our Trade Union colleagues from Merthyr Council.
Merthyr Council cuts access to union reps for hundreds of workers.
Hundreds of council and school workers in a Welsh local authority are due to have access to a union representative slashed.
Merthyr Tydfil County Borough Council is cutting the amount of time staff can spend with union reps under plans due to come into force.
The move will affect 660 workers represented by public services union UNISON Cymru/Wales.
Over the last six months alone, UNISON reps in Merthyr Council have dealt with queries on everything from bullying to sexual harassment.
The local authority is cutting access to union reps for staff from five down to two days a week.

CARE SERVICES
UNISON calls for the Welsh government to intervene in Rhondda care privatisation threat.
Hundreds of vulnerable people in Rhondda Cynon Taf could soon see the quality of care they receive compromised as the local authority considers privatising services, says UNISON.
UNISON Cymru/Wales, which represents thousands of care workers across the country, is calling for the Welsh government to step in and prevent this.

Housing workers in Cwmbran are being forced to use foodbanks to survive while bosses are receiving a £6,000 pay rise, says UNISON.
Staff at social enterprise Bron Afon Community Housing have had a below inflation pay rise imposed upon them and some say they are now relying on food banks to support their families.
UNISON and the GMB union are holding a demonstration over the pay dispute at Bron Afon on Thursday (September 28) outside the Bron Afon Housing Association on Llantarnum Way in Cwmbran from 4pm to 6pm.

CHANGING JOBS
Social workers quit council jobs in favour of agencies
More social workers in Wales are quitting permanent council paid work and signing up with agencies due to burnout and stress, according to figures seen by UNISON.
Social Care Wales (SCW) research has revealed a rise in social workers leaving permanent jobs with local authorities in favour of agency work from 2019 to 2021.

NJC STRIKE BALLOT
UNISON has been campaigning for a decent pay rise for council and school workers, who receive little recognition for their hard work.
Over the past 12 years, council and school staff have lost on average 25% from the value of their pay when measured against the Retail Price Index (RPI).
UNISON has called for a pay increase of inflation plus 2%, but employers are only offering a flat-rate increase. In a cost-of-living crisis, it's not good enough.

PAY UP 2023
Care workers, refuse collectors, social workers, teaching assistants, community workers, street cleaners and so many more go above and beyond every single day. Local government staff keep communities safe, clean and accessible, yet there is often little or no recognition for your hard work.
With the cost-of-living skyrocketing to new highs every day, it’s time to rise up and demand decent pay for the work you do.

RIGHT TO STRIKE
Dear General Council members,
The Wales TUC is organising a day of action on the right to strike on Wednesday 1st February and we’re holding a rally outside the Wales Office in Cardiff (near Betty Campbells statue) at 11.30, to protest against the Bill. The following union representatives have been asked to speak (Unison, GMB, NEU, NAHT, PCS, Unite, RMT, FBU, NASUWT, UCU, UCAC, Prospect, CWU, RCM). We would like to maximise turnout, so please can you share the information with your wider members in Wales.

PROTECT THE RIGHT TO STRIKE
Our right to strike is under attack.
Rishi Sunak has just detailed his anti-union legislation and plans to introduce new laws in the coming weeks.
It means that when workers democratically vote to strike, they could be forced to work and sacked if they don’t. That’s wrong, unworkable, and almost certainly illegal.
These new laws are a direct attack on working people’s fundamental right to strike to defend their pay, terms and conditions.
January - 2023
ANTI-STRIKE BILL
Three things you need to know about the anti-strike bill.
The government's new law is being voted on and is a full frontal attack on the rights of working people.
The UK is seeing record levels of strike action as ambulance workers, nurses, transport workers and teachers take a stand against the crisis in our public services.
Yet, rather than engaging with the people who keep our country running, or finding solutions to staffing shortages and waiting lists, the government is intent on punishing frontline workers when they speak out.

HAVE YOUR SAY
Higher Education pay campaign and strike ballot 2022.
Have your say on Higher Education pay.
The University and Colleges Employers Association have made their final pay offer: a below-inflation pay rise of 3% for most Higher Education staff and between 9% and 3% for those on pay points 3 to 19. They didn’t offer any more during the dispute process and will now impose this pay increase on 1 August 2022.
With RPI inflation at 11.8% and your pay only set to go up by 3% this pay rise is a pay cut. The higher increases on the lower spinal points are partly being proposed to keep pay at legal rates – we think you’re worth more than that.
July - 2022
UK WORKERS WIN
Huge win for UK workers! All workers will now receive the same minimum level of paid annual holiday leave, regardless of how many hours they work, thanks to a case brought by UNISON in the UK Supreme Court.
The judgment will particularly affect agency, part-time and term-time workers including thousands of school support staff.
Now it will no longer be possible for employers to argue staff who don’t work all year are only entitled to holiday based on the hours they work.
Today’s decision is also good news for anyone working irregular hours or on zero-hours contracts.

16-year-olds will be voting for the first time in a local election in Wales.
Unison Wales has heard from first time voter Julia who told us public services are vital to her. She said: "Voting is vital for me because without doing so, people may not see the change that they would like to see, in the government, and in their day-to-day lives.
"By voting everyone has a say in their future and positive change will be implemented.
"It is extremely important for me as it reminds me that as a community we have a say and in turn change will take place."

Up to 50,000 people die each year in the UK from work-related ill health and accidents. Although few UNISON members die in workplace incidents, many suffer injuries and work-related ill health.

LOCAL COUNCIL ELECTIONS
The local council elections in May are a great opportunity for UNISON Cymru Wales to talk about why it’s so important to invest in public services and in public service workers.
We want to influence politicians and public opinion to address the needs of working people and Welsh communities. We’re asking council candidates to pledge their support for UNISON’s priorities and work with us to deliver them.

Christina McAnea statement. Solidarity from @unisontheunion with @nautilusint and @RMTunion. UNISON will stand shoulder to shoulder with you. Shameful behaviour by @POferriesupdate - your reputation will not recover from this.
Nautilus International Statement
Nautilus International general secretary Mark Dickinson
The news that P&O Ferries is sacking the crew across its centre UK fleet is a betrayal of British workers. It is nothing short of scandalous given that this Dubai owned company received millions of pounds of British taxpayer's money during the pandemic.
There was no consultation and no notice given by P&O. Be assured the full resources of Nautilus International stand ready to act in defence of our members. We believe it is in our members' best interest to stay onboard until further notice.

on the sacrifices
of a million women before me
thinking
what can I do

UNISON MEMBERS WINTER FUEL FUND
This year’s UNISON winter fuel fund opens on 31 January.
The fund will offer grants of up to £200 and is designed to help the union’s most vulnerable low-income members.
It was announced today that inflation rose to 5.4% in the 12 months to December. With the cost of living rising at the fastest rate for 30 years, UNISON understands the financial hardship many members face whether it be due to rising living costs, the removal of universal credit uplift or other inflationary pressures.
In addition, the possibility of added pressure on low-income households looms as gas and electricity costs look set to increase even further in the near future.
