VOTE YES - BALLOT PAPERS

You should now be starting to receive your ballot papers in the post. It is better to get it done as soon as it comes otherwise you might forget.

VOTE YES FOR INDUSTRIAL ACTION IN THE NJC PAY BALLOT

What members need to do

1. Post back your ballot

We will send your ballot paper in early December. Keep your eyes peeled and make sure you use your vote. It is vital that we get a high turnout. We must hear from everyone – every role, every workplace, every pay band! Every member must post their ballot paper back using the freepost envelope so it reaches us by 14 January.

If your ballot is lost or spoiled, you can get a replacement by logging into ‘My Unison’ at my.unison.org.uk or call the hotline on 0800 0 857 857.

The hotline is open between 9 December and 10 January.

2. Vote yes! for action on pay

We know going on strike is not something you do lightly. Your job is incredibly important, and people rely on you. But your employer has made you, and other council and school workers, an unfair offer.

Vote Yes Video

1.75% might sound like it’s better than nothing – but with inflation well above 3%, it’s a real terms pay cut. This year, every pound in your pay packet will really count.

It comes after a decade of declining pay. The value of your pay is now 25% lower than it was in 2010! Year after year, it’s been chipped away.

Unless we say ‘enough!’, your pay will fall further, and those holding the purse strings will get away with it. It’s time to take action.

3. Tell your colleagues

If your colleague is not a member of UNISON, that means they won’t be able to vote, so make sure you tell them to join by 3 January to have their say! They can join online, it takes 5 minutes.

FOOD BANKS COLLECTION

It is with sadness that in 2021 we have to collect for food banks. Unfortunately, it's something that many of our members use and we have noticed the need has increased recently.

Torfaen UNISON will be helping to collect the items on the graphic below to help families have the best Christmas possible.

All you need to do is purchase or check your cupboard for one or more of these items and donate it to your

local food bank or arrange for us to collect and we will deliver it to them.

We know they would appreciate a donation, however big or small!

MESSAGE OF SUPPORT FROM TORFAEN UNISON BRANCH

Torfaen UNISON represents cleaners, care workers, school staff, housing workers, social workers and many others working in the Public and voluntary Sector.

So many of our members alongside those who work in the NHS are at the frontline of the fight against coronavirus in our community.

As a UNISON branch we, along with the wider union are deeply concerned about the shocking lack of personal protective equipment for staff in the frontline.

Staff who need this to keep themselves and us safe, not only are the NHS suffering from the lack of PPE, but so too are our members in care homes, schools and other frontline services.

It is essential that the Government urgently increase the supply of PPE in hospitals, social care and wherever assessments consider members could be at risk, we also need testing to be rolled out now to frontline staff to enable them to keep themselves and others safe.

If you are concerned about the lack of PPE at work, please let us know, we are here for you.

Either raise it with us directly by calling the branch on: 01495 766356

Or message us at torfaenunison@torfaenunison.co.uk

Alternatively, click on the links for the UNISON online PPE alert reporting tool and the Wales TUC online whistleblowing hotline.

Whatever concerns you have as we move further into this unprecedented territory, please contact us if there is anything we can do to support you.

Keep safe, and thank you for everything that you do to keep us safe

IMPORTANT NOTICE: COVID-19 UPDATE

Statement by Kirsty Williams Minister for Education

I’d like to thank parents for listening to the advice and keeping most children at home. I’d be grateful if tomorrow morning you only use schools or childcare as a last resort.

The advice has not changed as a result of tonight’s decision to further restrict movement, which our First Minister, along with other UK leaders took with the sole aim of slowing the spread of coronavirus.

Children should be at home wherever possible, critical workers will still need to have safe care arrangements for their children. Our schools and childcare settings are providing a vital service to support critical workers and our most vulnerable children.

Those involved in the current arrangements looking after children should continue. Many thanks to our amazing teaching and childcare professionals for their commitment in this time of national need.

This situation will continue for the immediate term but we will be reviewing with healthcare professionals, local authorities and our teaching unions.
