What a wonderful celebration of Caerphilly School Support staff at Llancaiach Fawr on November 23rd!!
Staff, their Headteachers and a host of dignitaries including the Mayor Cllr Mike Adams, Cabinet Member for Education, Cllr Phillipa Marsden and Hayden Llewelyn from the Education Workforce Council were on hand to present dozens of Support staff with certificates to recognise the fantastic work they do in their respective schools.
Cabinet Member for Education Cllr Phillipa Marsden says ''On behalf of the Cabinet I thank you for all that you do. It makes me so proud to know that these people are part of the Caerphilly County Borough Council family and you are the bedrock, the glue in our school communities.''

UNISON MONEY MATTERS EVENT
Christmas is just around the corner (I know if can’t believe it) and while it's a fabulous time of year for many, it can also be a time when we all spend more than we think and often spend more than we have, leading us into a very miserable and sometimes worrying January.
So how can we in Caerphilly Unison help you with this?
Well, we're hold an event on Tuesday 13th November from 12noon – 2pm in the Glass Restaurant, Ty Penallta focussing on everything to do with money and how you can manage and make the most of what '££' you have or don’t have.
We’ve got loads of fabulous organisations attending. In the glass restaurant we have:
• Thompsons Solicitors - offering information on their FREE Will service which is available to all Unison members;
• Lighthouse Financial Planning – with advice on how to get your short term and longer term finances ship-shape;
• Islwyn Credit Union and Smart Money - providing information and advice on how Credit Unions can help with savings and borrowing;
• Torfaen Pensions - demonstrating their new 'My Pensions Online' website; helping you to get registered and answering those pension queries you may have.
And last but by no means least, our headliner (which we're very exited about) is Mrs Jane Clack. Some of you may have seen Jane on the ITV Tonight programme back in the summer. Jane works for an organisation called ‘Payplan’ and is a highly respected Money Advice Consultant who has helped countless people with various financial issues. Jane will be giving a presentation in the Sirhowy room from 12-1pm on the 13th November. Excuse the pun, but you really cannot afford to miss her.
So why not make one New Year resolution early and come along to our event. Let’s see if we can make your Christmas a little 'merrier' and your New Year 'happier' by getting those financial headaches sorted.

SPECIAL DRAMA SCREENING IN BLACKWOOD MINERS INSTITUTE FOR UNISON MEMBERS
Fio presents: The Island A Towering Celebration Of Human Spirit
A soaring, award-winning drama from apartheid-era South Africa comes to Blackwood Miners' Institute in early November.
Inspired by Robben Island Prison...
Drawing on the stories that linger from the notorious gaol where Nelson Mandela was incarcerated, The Island is a classic of modern theatre.
Like the film dramas Bridge Over The River Kwai, Papillon and Midnight Express, The Island features prisoners staggering through days of pointless, back-breaking labour, coping with vicious beatings from the guards and spending their nights remembering a life outside their current misery.
Sophocles In South Africa...
The two men at the heart of the play are political prisoners and they challenge the authorities with a performance of Antigone in front of the other inmates and guards, an act of defiance from people who have lost everything.
Ultimately uplifting, The Island is a slow burning testament to the resiliency of the human heart. The production is at Blackwood Miners' Institute on Saturday 3 November at 7.30pm. Tickets cost just £5 for Unison Members (the offer also extends to friends and family) and are available from the venue's box office either in person or via the phone on 01495 227206 or from our website - www.blackwoodminersinstitute.com
Fio yn cyflwyno: The Island Dathliad mawreddog o Ysbryd dynol
Daw drama esgynnol wobrwyol o oes apartheid De Affrica i Sefydliad y Glowyr Coed Duon yn gynnar ym mis Tachwedd.
Ysbrydolwyd gan Garchar Ynys Robben...
Gan dynnu ar y straeon sy'n parhau o'r carchar enwog lle cafodd Nelson Mandela ei garcharu, mae 'The Island' yn glasur o theatr fodern.
Fel y dramau ffilm 'Bridge Over The River Kwai', 'Papillon' a 'Midnight Express', mae 'The Island' yn portreadu carcharorion yn siglo drwy ddiwrnodau o lafur dibwrpas, llafurus, yn ymdopi â churo ffyrnig gan y swyddogion ac yn treulio eu nosweithiau yn hiraethu am fywyd y tu hwnt i'w trallod bresennol.
Sophocles yn Ne'r Affrig...
Mae'r ddau ddyn sydd wrth wraidd y ddrama yn garcharorion gwleidyddol ac maent yn herio'r awdurdodau gyda pherfformiad o Antigone o flaen y carcharorion a'r swyddogion eraill - gweithred herfeiddiol gan bobl sydd wedi colli popeth.
Yn ddrama i ysbrydoli, mae 'The Island' yn dystiolaeth sy'n mudlosgi i wydnwch y galon ddynol. Mae'r cynhyrchiad yn Sefydliad y Glowyr Coed Duon ar ddydd Sadwrn 3 Tachwedd am 7.30pm. Mae tocynnau'n costio £5 yn unig i Aelodau Unison (mae'r cynnig hefyd yn ymestyn at ffrindiau a theulu) ac maent ar gael o swyddfa docynnau'r lleoliad naill ai mewn person neu dros y ffôn ar 01495 227206 neu o'r gwefan - www.blackwoodminersinstitute.com

UNISON COMMEND CAERPHILLY COUNCIL'S SUPPORT FOR EMPLOYMENT CHARTER
Caerphilly county borough council is backing a nationwide charter that has been developed to support terminally ill employees in the workplace.
The 'Dying to Work' voluntary charter calls on employers to provide additional protection for their terminally ill workers.
Cllr Dave Poole, Leader of the Council said, "Caerphilly CBC considers its 8,500+ workforce to be its most important asset and we are already have comprehensive support mechanisms in place whenever any of our employees are faced with difficult illnesses."
"This pledge strengthens our position and aligns us to other major employers across the UK who are also sympathetic to the needs of their dedicated employees."
Caerphilly council is the latest organisation to sign up and follows in the footsteps of employers such as Rolls Royce, the Royal Mail and the Co-op.
The charter is part of the TUC's wider Dying to Work campaign which is seeking greater security for terminally-ill workers where they cannot be dismissed as a result of their condition.
In a joint statement of support, Unison, Unite and the GMB union said, "We commend Caerphilly county borough council for supporting this charter, which provides additional rights and protection for workers at all levels across the organisation. We would encourage other employers to follow suit and demonstrate their commitment to their workforce by signing up to the 'Dying to Work' charter."

10 DAYS TO WELL BEING
From Thursday 27th September to Wednesday 10th October, a series of workshops and information sessions will be available to all staff, filled with ways to increase and maintain your physical and mental wellbeing. Attached is an overview of the sessions available.
To book a place on any of the sessions please contact Lianne Dallimore in the Branch.
On the 10th September a group of Unison Members and Officers visited the Houses of Parliament. It was a very early start indeed (05.30am) but well worth the dark trip along the M4.
Parliament can only be described as 'WOW' so full of history and the most beautiful art work. Definitely a must for anyone who hasn't visited already.
We had the pleasure of meeting up with Gerald Jones MP and Tyrone Powell , who kindly took us for tea on the terrace of Parliament. Sitting in the sun on the banks of the river Thames what more could you ask for I hear you say. Dennis Skinner. Yes! We had the good fortune to be introduced and chat with one of the most passionate and formidable MP's of our time. He is a remarkable man and at 86 years of age still has a 'fire in his belly' that most of us could only dream of.
We finished our day with seats in the public gallery and watched a live debate in the Commons on the funding of Sixth Form Education and Further and Higher Education. A great day was had by all.
THE MENOPAUSE AND ME - REPORT RESULTS
Since June 2018, the Caerphilly Unison branch has been undertaking a piece of work looking at the experiences of women in the workplace who are peri-menopausal or menopausal.
This work sought views/comments from women (and men where they wished to participate) on:
The level of support for a Menopause at Work Policy/Guidance;
Their experience(s) (physical and mental effects) of the menopause or peri-menopause, and
What would help them and/or they would like to see in the workplace.
The Branch is pleased to report that this work is now complete and a short report has been produced with our findings. The results make for interesting reading, so why not take a look for yourself.
Finally, we'd like to say a big THANK YOU to all those who came to see us, shared their stories, offered 'hints and tips' on surviving the menopause, and more importantly, reassured us that it does get better - there is light at the end of the tunnel and to them we salute you.
Please read our report..
LIGHTHOUSE FINANCIAL ADVICE
You will have received an email or hard copy letter recently in relation to workforce planning. The email/letter asks for expressions of interest from staff who may wish to voluntarily reduce their hours, take flexible retirement, voluntary severance or early retirement by mutual consent.
We understand that making a decision of this nature can't (and shouldn't) be taken lightly, so to support you with this we thought it would be useful to offer the services of our financial partners 'Lighthouse Financial Advice'.
Appointments will be offered over three different days and venues so hopefully there will be one to suit everyone.
Appointments will be approximately 30min long and offered on a first come first served basis. Full details of the times, venues and how to make an appointment are detailed in the attachment. Please note appointments must be made via Lighthouse Financial Advice.
While appointments over the three days are limited, private appointments can be made should you wish to see an advisor. Again contact should be made with Lighthouse Financial Advice to do this.
Kind Regards, Lianne Dallimore Branch Chair
MENOPAUSE AND ME EVENT - CAERPHILLY LIBRARY
It's our last roadshow for the Menopause and Me event at Caerphilly Library on Tuesday August 7th at 11am until 1pm. If you haven't caught one already then why don't you pop in where Lianne will be distributing lots of information and advice on the menopause.
Guys, don't be shy, there's even advice on how you can help too - trust me we need it sometimes!!
And if that's not incentive enough every Unison member who attends will get a free hand-held fan.

CAERPHILLY UNISON AT THE BIG CHEESE
What a weekend!! Thousands upon thousands of people flocked to Caerphilly on the 28th/29th July to have fun in the sun at the Big Cheese! Caerphilly Unison was there and the 3 Amigos (Juan Lianne and Steve) toughed out the slightly damp conditions on Sunday to meet and greet people in their nice purple branded marquee! There were Lollipops and balloons a-plenty! The large majority of the weekend was spent chatting to existing members seeking advice. Dozens of membership forms were also handed out to potential new members! We genuinely enjoyed the weekend and it was so nice to engage with some of our members outside a working environment! Take a look at the pictures!! Cheesy grins at the Big Cheese – what more can I say!! Please keep an eye out on our social media pages for forthcoming events.
LIANNE AT THE LGBTQ + Blackwood Basements 2nd Birthday Party
As well as attending the Big Cheese Wonder Woman Lianne also managed to spare time to attend Blackwood basements 2nd Birthday Party of their LGBTQ+ group. Lianne says "It was so nice to see so many young people with such confidence. What talents they have! The singing was fantastic! A great day but I did have too much tea and cake!!" Caerphilly Unison will be looking to further support LGBTQ+ groups throughout the borough wherever possible. Some fabulous pictures below although Steve was slightly miffed that all the cake had gone by the time Lianne came back to the Big Cheese!! If you have any groups you would like us to attend or support please contact us at firstname.lastname@example.org or 01443 863279 or on the usual social Media pages.
